Both the men’s and women’s tennis teams went on a tough stretch of away games but came out successful.

The women’s matches included four different schools in four different locations. They faced Incarnate Word, where they won 7-0, Sam Houston State, where they won 4-3, Lamar, where they won 4-3, and finally, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, in which they lost 4-3.

The women are now 17-6 overall (.739 pct) and have a 7-2 conference record.

After facing the University of Texas-San Antonio and Incarnate Word, the men received a break on Saturday and got back to work the next two days against Lamar and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. They lost to Lamar, 4-3, and lost to Corpus Christi, 5-2. The men are now 17-8 overall (.680 pct) and have a 2-2 conference record.

In singles, the men clinched three wins out of six against Lamar and against Corpus Christi they managed to get one win out of six. Nico Agritelley was strong in both performances, as he was the only one to win both of his matches. Agritelley beat his competition from Lamar 6-3, 6-4, and his competition from Corpus Christi 7-6, 3-6, 6-4.

In doubles, the men had no victories out of two matches played against Lamar, which was the deciding factor in their loss by missing the doubles point, and had two victories out of three matches played against Corpus Christi.

“Corpus has been dominant in our conference the last few years but today we showed we’re right there with him,” freshman Josh Sheehy said. “The match came down to the last two matches and we had our chances but they were the better team today. Our team is proud of our efforts but we’re still hungry for more.”

In women’s singles, they earned all six wins against Incarnate Word, three wins out of six against Sam Houston State, three wins out of six against Lamar and three wins out of six against Corpus Christi. Lucile Pothier and Whitney Williams stood out in singles for the Wildcats as they won all four of their singles matches.

In doubles, the women got three victories out of three against Incarnate Word, two victories out of three against Sam Houston State, two victories out of three against Lamar, and one victory out of three against Corpus Christi.

“Being on the road is always tough but our team never ceases to amaze me when it comes to our toughness on and off the court,” freshman Jordan Henry said. “We took every situation thrown at us in stride whether it was a loud crowd or tough opponent and we never let any setbacks get us down.”

The men’s next match will be April 13 against Midwestern State University at 5 p.m. on campus. The women’s next match will also be on campus April 9 against Central Arkansas at 1 p.m.
