The women’s tennis team had a home match against Northwestern State University in which they picked up a team victory of 4-2.

This win was big for the Wildcats and their first against NSU since the move to Div. I. The victory puts the women at a a 4-1 conference record and keeps them in second place of the Southland Conference.

In singles, the women picked up three victories out of five matches played. Junior Erin Walker was able to win the final match played at the number one spot clinching the win over Northwestern. She battled hard the first two sets but dominated in the third winning by a score of 7-5, 6-7 (6-8), 6-1.

The other victories came from sophomores Lucile Pothier, who won her match 6-2, 6-1, and Whitney Williams, with 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victories.

“We were really excited to get the win,” senior Nada Marjanovic said. “We have been working hard, and fighting hard through these tough matches. They had beat us the last few times, and in fact every time since I’ve been on the team. I’m so glad my team and I could get rewarded for all the hard work we’ve been putting in.”

In doubles, the women were very impressive as they swept Northwestern in two matches. The teams for the match included Walker/Williams, senior Kaysie Hermsdorf/Pothier, and Marjanovic with sophomore Andrea Crook.

Walker and Williams won their match 6-3, Hermsdorf and Pothier’s match went unfinished, and Marjanovic and Crook won their match 6-1.

“Today’s win wasn’t just good for this years conference play but it was a big win for ACU’s women tennis because it has been a while since we have beaten them,” Hermsdorf said. “We have played them since I was a freshman and we never quite got the win so it was awesome, now as a senior, to get that win today. We are doing well right now and our team is coming together on a high level.”

The women’s next matches will stretch over this weekend into Monday. They will face the University of the Incarnate Word on Friday, Sam Houston State University on Saturday, Lamar University on Sunday, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Monday all being away conference matches.
