Both the men and women’s tennis teams traveled to Arizona last weekend to play at the Grand Canyon invitational, their final tournament of the semester.

The men’s singles matches included sophomore Paul Domanski and freshmen Joshua Sheehy and Sebastion Langdon. Sheehy was able to win in flight one of the men’s singles bracket and won the championship against Luca Marquard from UCI in a 2-6, 7-5, 7-5 match. Domanski and Langdon ended up playing each other for a three set championship match, but Domanski won with a score of 6-7, 7-6, 6-2.

The men’s doubles pairs included Nico Agritelley/Henry Adams and Cole Lawson/Langdon. Agritelley and Adams fought their way to a championship in the flight one doubles bracket and won against competition from UCI. Lawson and Langdon also made it to the championship in the flight two doubles bracket and won 7-5 against Domankski and Hunter Holman.

“This past weekend in Arizona was a great way to end the fall season,” Lawson said. “In addition to our results, it is amazing to see how our team compatibility has continued to grow stronger and the positive impact it has had on our success. Being able to play a match with the whole team behind me is a great feeling, and that support can often mean the difference between winning and losing. I am also really looking forward to my first spring season. I know we are going to step up this spring because in addition to our skill level we are a family, and that closeness shows both on and off the court.”

The women’s singles matches included senior Kaysie Hermsdorf, junior Erin Walker and sophomore Lucile Pothier. Hermsdorf won three matches in the flight two singles bracket and made it to the championship, where she lost to Susie Baklini from GCU by a score of 6-4, 6-4. Walker made it through two matches in the flight one singles bracket and ended up meeting Pothier in the championship match. Walker won with a score of 7-5, 6-3.

In women’s doubles, Whitney Williams and Walker started with a bye in the first round and then won two matches to earn a championship match, where the pair won against GCU with a score of 7-5.

“The whole team really played a good tournament,” Pothier said. “We all fought hard on the court and we well represented ACU. I played well for this tournament and it was good to see that I was able to compete against good teams. Our results make me very optimistic for our matches the next semester.”
