Winter Olympics-One man’s take

It may just be me, but I just can’t get into the Winter Olympics. They don’t excite me, at all. I am very patriotic and I love watching my country win medals but the summer Olympics are far better in my opinion. You can call me crazy for not enjoying hockey, luge or even curling, but they just don’t draw me in like other sports.

During the summer Olympics of 2012, USA won the medal count by a long-shot, racking up 104 medals. Watching Michael Phelps dominate is one of the greatest things I have witnessed. The winter games have Shaun White but this year it was sad watching him lose his gold medal on a poorly-made half pipe, a half pipe many athletes have hurled their bodies down in defeat as many have complained about the lack of consistency. Olympians are harshly criticizing the conditions that they have been given. I mean, this is the ultimate competition. It is the Olympics, and they are preforming in less-than-professional venues. It is quite comical if you ask me.

Maybe if figure skating was more like the movie Blades of Glory, my eyes would be glued to the television. Watching Will Ferrel and a hilarious cast pull off mesmerizing moves on the ice in front of the world stage would be something that I would definitely find time in my schedule to witness. But sadly, that’s not going to happen. Because of that, I will never get into figure skating. I refuse.

The only sport I could maybe possibly see myself getting into is ice hockey. I enjoy the team sports and it is the closest thing to football in the Olympics. And let’s be real, football is the greatest sport in the world. If you disagree you are wrong.

Since I am not a big fan of the winter sports and honestly don’t really care about the winter Olympics, what can I enjoy about them?

Possibly my favorite thing about this winter Olympics has been watching how ridiculously unprepared Sochi has been. It all started with the opening ceremonies when one of the Olympic rings did not expand into a full circle. Hotels with broken curtains and doorknobs falling off are just a few examples. Internet dangling from the ceiling, unfinished roads, toilets without any privacy and water that is yellow. It is like Russia is playing a big joke on the rest of the world.

The winter Olympics in Sochi have been interesting but not interesting enough for me to watch.
