ACU’s first season in the Southland Conference ended this Friday as the Wildcats lost in straight sets to rival Incarnate Word. The ‘Cats finished their first season in conference with a 2-12 record and a 6-16 overall record. Incarnate Word on the other hand moved their conference record to .500 as they improved to 7-7 and 12-11 overall.

The ‘Cats gave a valiant effort in the first two sets, only losing 25-20 and 25-22. The final set was a different story as Incarnate Word dominated 25-14. ACU struggled to produce offensively as the team hit only .095. The offense had a bright spot on the night with Jennifer Loerch who had 11 kills and hit a solid .250. Loerch also helped defensively digging out 11 attacks.

Incarnate Word dominated offensively as they almost tripled the Wildcats hitting percentage at .264. The Cardinals were led by Brittani Deer on offense as she hit an astounding .500.

Coach Mock felt the team gave a great effort but wanted more from the team the second time around.

“I expected a little bit more competitively since we saw Incarnate Word the second time, but the girls are going to have to put out a better product against division one teams,” Mock said.

The ‘Cats are in an odd position since the Southland season is over but their next game won’t be until they travel to Arizona to take on Grand Canyon State in two weeks. Senior defensive specialist Madelyn Robinett said she feels the team will be well rested and prepared to take on Grand Canyon State.

“I think it will be beneficial just because our bodies need a break and hopefully we can end the season on positive note,” Robinett said.

ACU will also be taking on Incarnate Word the day after they face Grand Canyon State to finish out the season.
