Sandwiches on the cheap

Sandwiches and burgers can serve as swift and thrifty options for famished college students – and they don’t have to come off the value menu.

Several area establishments offer discounted burgers and sandwiches, which can be a perfect solution for on-the-go students.

Rick and Carolyn’s Burgers and Fries, located at 549 Ambler Avenue, offers $1 dollar burgers after 5 p.m. The burgers are small, but not too small. Two can easily satisfy a vigorously rumbling tummy. For those with a larger appetite, the restaurant offers several delicious side items, including fried okra breaded to perfection.

Betty Rose’s Little Brisket, located at 1055 North Judge Ely Blvd., serves up $1 barbeque sandwiches on Thursdays. Betty Rose’s piles fresh chopped brisket on top of a toasted bun, but they hold back on the sauce, meaning the sandwiches are perfect for brisket enthusiasts who are not fans of saucy sandwiches.

Larry’s Better Burger, located at 1233 North Treadaway Blvd., offers a wide menu of fare, including burgers, fries and chicken sandwiches all for around $3, but they only take cash.

And of course, for those who want a regular deli-style sandwich, most Subway locations are offering foot-long sub sandwiches for $5, or other daily specials. With 12 locations in Abilene and 34,246 locations worldwide, Subway is now the world’s largest fast-food franchise. So, chances are there is a location wherever a hungry patron finds oneself.

The sandwich makes perfect sense for students running between classes, and whether they are made at home or purchased out on the town, the sandwich is likely to remain a staple of the college student’s diet.
